Alice was a young girl who enjoyed spending time outdoors. One day, her stepfather took her to the park for a picnic.
As they sat down on the blanket and began to eat their sandwiches, Alice noticed that a squirrel had climbed up a nearby tree. She watched in amazement as the squirrel dug into a hole in the trunk of the tree and began to gather nuts.
Curious about what the squirrel was doing, Alice asked her stepfather, “Why is that squirrel digging into the tree?”
Her stepfather smiled and replied, “The squirrel is making a storage area for its food. It will store the nuts it gathers in this hole so it has something to eat later.”
Alice looked at the squirrel and saw that it was working hard to fill up the hole with nuts. She realized that animals were resourceful creatures who used their environment to survive.
From that moment on, Alice began to pay more attention to the animals around her. She learned about their habits and how they interacted with each other and their surroundings.
Alice’s time outdoors allowed her to learn valuable lessons about life from nature. And she always felt grateful for having such a wonderful stepfather who taught her so much along the way.
